The other four tales each tell the story of a different animal, such as the travels of the white seal Kotick the battle between the courageous mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and the deadly cobra Nag Toomai and the elephant dance and the camp animals of the queen’s guard. The first three tales include some of the most charming and unforgettable characters in literature-the man-cub Mowgli, the black panther Bagheera, the wise brown bear Baloo, the ruthless tiger Shere Khan, and the hypnotic python Kaa. Composed of seven tales, each one accompanied by a poem, The Jungle Book is a coming of age fantasy that introduces a lush, colorful world full of adventure and danger.

Since its publication in 1894, Rudyard Kipling’s beloved masterpiece The Jungle Book has been celebrated by generations of readers. The Jungle Book features stunning artwork and nine 3-D interactive elements crafted by MinaLima Design, the award-winning design studio behind the graphics for the Harry Potter film franchise and the illustrated classic Peter Pan. Another more cost-effective option is a terrific Folio Society edition available from £8.For fans of all ages, legendary British writer Rudyard Kipling’s complete collection of enchanting fables set in India-the basis of the beloved animated Disney film and a modern cinematic retelling from director Jon Favreau-now available in a deluxe four-color illustrated collectible edition. The later editions can be acquired at reasonable prices. These and the various illustrated editions of the Jungle book can be seen in the link below. Sets of the portfolio are available, many rebound, and their prices will run into the thousands. Though the sizes of the images are reduced from the those of the portfolio they are still spectacular. Subsequent editions were released in a similar format. The illustrations were first paired with their text in 1908 and bound in fetching red cloth with some modest gilt decoration. The sharp lines and precise detail of the foreground sit upon beautifully delicate backdrops creating an almost dreamlike effect. Perhaps this stand-alone nature is the key to their brilliance. Instead Macmillan released the images alone, mounted on card within a portfolio. These were not, however, intended for a new edition of the book. This came in 1903, when the young Detmold twins, Edward and Maurice, were asked by Macmillan to collaborate on 16 watercolour paintings. This was, of course, during the golden age of illustration, making it inevitable that more lavish work would soon be commissioned. Although Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book was illustrated from its first edition in 1894, these black and white images (some done by Kipling’s Father) did not, perhaps, keep pace with the book’s rampant success.
